Julie Ross's works draw on a variety of narrative impulses, interweaving religious iconography with Greek mythology, folk tales and fables.
Her sculpture depicts biblical or mythological characters such as Adam and Eve, or Cupid and Venus, most of the protagonists in Ross's narrative scheme are endowed with animal heads such as foxes, rabbits and deers. This surrealist strategy of unexpected juxtaposition, infers the figurative characters with a symbolism that speaks of animal totems, carnality and instinctual drives. Rabbits become emblematic of fertility, while foxes conjure up metaphors around sexual assertion or cunning.
