In the Vineyard
A challenging vintage throughout the country as a very wet but mild winter was followed by drought conditions throughout January and February. The grapes moved into veraison earlier than usual and we netted in the third week of January to protect the fruit from the ravenous birds who swoop in at the first sign of colour.
Our vineyard team did their usual meticulous job of creating an open vine canopy by removing excess foliage by hand to allow air movement to dry the fruit and allow sunlight penetration. The fruit was clean with intense flavours so it was then a case of anticipating the approaching weather bombs, and picking when the fruit had dried and reconcentrated the flavours.
Choosing only perfect fruit meant our yields were low this season, with our rosé being the only red wine produced from the 2017 vintage.
In the Winery
Made from our Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec this complex blend balances lush fruit with a firm framework. The grapes were pressed, left on the skins for a short time to achieve the desired colour and flavor profile, then vinified at cool temperatures. Stop-fermentation achieved an exceptional fruit/acid/sugar balance in this wine.
A very beautiful pale pink, this elegant rosé recalls aromas of summer berries followed by a subtle herbal cherry lift.
The palate suggests layers of cranberry, rhubarb, apple and cinnamon with notes of tamarillo and sour cherry. A subtle creamy mouthfeel is offset by the savoury backbone - this delicious medium-dry wine has a sliver of sweetness balanced by a touch of salty minerality and a lively, clean finish.
Aging potential: As with most rosés, this wine is designed to drink over the summer following harvest. However, aging accentuates the dried fruit characters. Enjoy chilled with a wide variety of summer food flavours, or simply as a refreshing aperitif.
