A shimmering pale straw colour, this lively wine reveals aromas of nashi pear, kiwifruit and lychee with a subtle flinty lift. The sumptuous, viscous midpalate is well balanced with concentrated lemon/ lemongrass, crushed cashew and spiced notes - think Asian fusion, with a hint of pear and rose water. A well- balanced tannin structure culminates in a satisfying crisp and clean finish.
In the Vineyard:
Another roller coaster of a year as an extremely wet winter morphed into the warmest summer on record while successive waves of humidity challenged us along with a couple of tropical cyclones. Nevertheless, our grapes proved to be remarkably resilient moving into veraison a couple of weeks earlier than usual. We netted in the third week of January to protect the fruit from the ravenous birds who swoop in at the first sign of colour. Our vineyard team did their usual meticulous job of creating an open vine canopy by removing excess foliage to allow air movement to dry the fruit and allow sunlight penetration. Only perfect bunches were then picked by hand starting in the third week of March.
In the Winery:
Two parcels of hand-picked fruit from our estate were processed separately. After destemming and crushing to press, the must was given skin contact for several hours, to allow release of aromatics and textural components before pressing. One parcel was cool fermented to dryness, while the second parcel was stop-fermented to retain some natural fruit sugars. After combining the two, the wine was then left to rest on light lees until bottling.
In stable cellaring conditions, the Pinot Gris 2018 will continue to evolve over the next 3-4 years. With time, the more immediate fruit freshness will be replaced by dried fruit, and oily characters.
Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier
Fragrant and alluring bouquet with ripe white-fleshed fruits, flowers and white pepper spice highlights and a steely youthful charm. Delicious on the palate with a tease of residual sweetness, a core of ripe white-fleshed fruit flavours, spice, elegance and silky texture. Long finish, persistent flavour and texture package. A lovely wine to enjoy today and through 2022.
