12 pack Pharos 2013

Regular price $518.00

Pharos is the premium red wine from Brick Bay, produced only in excellent vintages. In 2013 a wine of intensely complex aromas - dark berries, spices, liquorice, cedar and dark stonefruit. The lingering palate celebrates bright fruit and velvety tannins.

Quite possibly our best Pharos to date, a finely structured wine with immaculate fruit, great depth and a lingering finish.

Juggling the decisions of when to pick, with an eye on weather and fruit condition, is one of the more nerve-wracking tasks of the vintage. But with all fruit in perfect condition this year and no disease pressure, we had the luxury of waiting for optimum flavours to develop, taking care that we retain that all-important acidity and ensuring the sugar levels are not excessive to give us overly alcoholic wines.

In the winery, each of the 3 varieties was destemmed and crushed separately into small open-top fermenters. A selected yeast instigated fermentation, with the rising ‘cap’ of skins initially hand-plunged four times daily. As alcoholic fermentation proceeded, the plunging regime was decreased to avoid over-extraction. After a period of post-fermentation maceration to add structure and balance, the wine was racked, the skins gently pressed, settled, then aged in predominantly new French oak barriques. Different coopers and forest origins were utilized to optimize the potential of each grape varietal. After 10 months, selected barriques were blended together. The wine was then bottled without fining and bottle-aged for a further year before release.

Tasting Notes
Deeply brooding colour, with shades of vibrant purple and a carmine edge. Earthy and floral aromas slowly lead into ripe dark summer stonefruit, liquorice and berries with hints of vanilla, star anise, cedar and chocolate. The palate, very tight and powerful, displays an intense core threaded through with dense velvety tannins, fine, bright fruit and a sturdy structure.

A wine for time, evolution and revelation…….

Aging Potential: Totally approachable now, but in stable cellaring conditions, will continue to evolve and develop further complexity over the next 7-12 years

Reviews
Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier, writes ...
Dark, broody, rich and intense bouquet of blackberry and blueberry fruits, toasty oak shot with vanilla and brown spices, quite complex and very youthful. On the palate - equally intense, powerfully fruity and loaded with flavour and texture; firm ripe tannins, medium+ acidity; lots of tension and impact, quite complex with a long finish. Delicious!

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, writes ...
Beautifully ripe and fragrant, the bouquet shows cassis, dark plum, mixed spice and toasted nut characters with a hint of dried herb complexity. The palate is concentrated and beautifully weighted, and delivers excellent fruit richness and silky texture, wonderfully structured by supple tannins. The wine is generous and flavoursome, and finishes superbly long and delectable. At its best: now to 2023.
