A shimmering straw colour, this vibrant wine shows delicate aromatic layers of preserved lemon, apple and summer stone fruit. A definite saline complexity lingers well on the palate, finely counterbalanced by spices -bay and cardamon, crushed nuts - hazelnut and walnut. The intensely rich mid-palate is shot through with a scintillating citrus zest acidity. This is a limited release of a supremely harmonious wine of elegant length and poise.
In stable cellaring conditions, this wine should continue to evolve over the next 6-7 years.
In the Vineyard:
Another roller coaster of a year as an extremely wet winter morphed into the warmest summer on record while successive waves of humidity challenged us along with a couple of tropical cyclones. Nevertheless, our grapes proved to be remarkably resilient moving into veraison a couple of weeks earlier than usual. We netted in the third week of January to protect the fruit from the ravenous birds who swoop in at the first sign of colour in this, our earliest ripening variety. Our vineyard team did their usual meticulous job of creating an open vine canopy by removing excess foliage to allow air movement to dry the fruit and allow sunlight penetration. Only perfect bunches were then picked by hand starting in the third week of February, our earliest vintage on record at Brick Bay.
In the Winery:
The hand-harvested Chardonnay fruit was whole-bunch pressed, cold settled and then racked into one and two-year-old French barrels for fermentation. The wine remained on lees during the malo-lactic fermentation then remained in barrel for 11 months before bottling.

CAMERON DOUGLAS, MS: 92 points
A really lovely bouquet of Chardonnay - aromas of pear, apple and citrus, a leesy complex layer accentuated by layers of French oak and a light nutty cashew-like layer. Dry on the palate with a soft creamy texture with a silky polish. Medium+ weight with medium+ acidity. As the wine begins to relax in the glass the flavours of wood spice and oak begin to develop with a mild toastiness overlay. The synergies of cellar time begin to reveal themselves as well. Overall quite a complex wine with a lovely texture and finish. Balanced and well made. Drink now and through 2024.
