Tasting Notes:

A shimmering straw colour, this vibrant wine shows delicate aromatic layers of manuka blossom, toffee and appleskin, with fennel and saline layering. The flinty, saline, slightly chalky Chardonnay characteristics on the palate are here finely counterbalanced by restrained marzipan/almond and toffee notes, with an intensely rich mid-palate shot through with a scintillating lime zest acidity. This is a limited release of a supremely harmonious wine of elegant length and poise.

In the Vineyard:

A challenging vintage throughout the country as a very wet but mild winter was followed by drought conditions throughout January and February. The grapes moved into veraison earlier than usual and we netted in the third week of January to protect the fruit from the ravenous birds who swoop in at the first sign of colour. Our vineyard team did their usual meticulous job of creating an open vine canopy by removing excess foliage by hand to allow air movement to dry the fruit and allow sunlight penetration. The fruit was clean with intense flavours so it was then a case of anticipating the approaching weather bombs, and picking when the fruit had dried and reconcentrated the flavours. Naturally, juggling the decisions of when to pick, with an eye on weather and fruit condition makes for a nerve-wracking time, but we eventually hand-harvested perfect bunches of clean, fragrant fruit – our second Chardonnay harvest at Brick Bay.

In the Winery:

The hand-harvested Chardonnay fruit was whole-bunch pressed, cold settled and then racked into one and two-year-old French barrels for fermentation. The wine remained on lees during the malo-lactic fermentation then remained in barrel for 11 months before bottling.

92 Points

Distinctive bouquet, varietal and enticing bouquet. Aromas and scents of apple and grapefruit, white peach and lees. Oak and a light toasty wood complexity adding depth and intrigue. Gentle creamy texture leads into flavours of vanilla and oak spice then yellow stone fruits, citrus and apple. Almost full-bodied and weighty with medium+ alcohol and a rich core of flavour. Youthful, balanced and well made. Best drinking from late 2019 through 2024.
