6 Pack Pinot Gris 2016
This voluptuous, off-dry wine is characterised by alluring aromas and concentrated fruit weight – a beautifully balanced, food-friendly wine.
In the Vineyard:
2016 was a rollercoaster of a vintage here in Matakana. We experienced a mixed bag of wind, rain, humidity and plenty of sunshine! Fortunately, a mild winter and an early spring had allowed us to establish a good healthy, disease-free canopy, able to cope with the vagaries of the weather. Healthy vines are more able to withstand the pressures of disease, and a well-managed open canopy exposes the grapes to sunshine and air movement.
The grapes moved into veraison earlier than usual and we rushed to net in the third week of January to protect from the ravenous birds who swoop in at the first sign of colour. Juggling the decisions of when to pick, with an eye on weather and fruit condition, is one of the more nerve-wracking tasks of the vintage. It was a case of patiently waiting for optimum flavours to develop, taking care that we retain that all-important acidity and ensuring the sugar levels are not excessive to give us overly alcoholic wines.
Our vineyard team worked hard at fruit-thinning and leaf plucking, and by mid March we had started to select and hand-harvest perfect bunches of clean, fragrant fruit.

In the Winery:
Two parcels of hand-picked fruit from our estate were processed separately. After destemming and crushing to press, the must was given skin contact for several hours, to allow release of aromatics and textural components before pressing. One parcel was cool fermented to dryness, while the second parcel was stop-fermented to retain some natural fruit sugars. After combining the two, the wine was then left to rest on light lees until bottling.
A shimmering straw colour, this wine shows layers of pear, roasted fig and summer berries.
The sumptuous midpalate is well balanced with concentrated nectarine, kiwifruit and mandarin notes, a hint of fennel and lime, leading through to a satisfying crisp and clean finish.
Aging Potential: In stable cellaring conditions, the Pinot Gris 2016 will continue to evolve over the next 3-4 years. With time, the more immediate fruit freshness will be replaced by dried fruit, and oily characters.
Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier
Very fragrant and quite plush with aromas of sweet pear and white peach, a soft lees and whisper of ginger; fleshy, floral and alluring. On the palate - vibrant, youthful and fruity with flavours of pear and apple and a touch of quince; fresh ripe acidity adds texture and bite; a dry finish with decent length and harmony. A delicious wine and lovely example.
